Ross Bay is a region of high volcanic activity.
The most active volcano is Mount Erebus.
The first question to ask is why the Ross Sea region is an active volcanic area.
The second question might be that type of volcano is Mount Erebus?
To answer this second question the Board to take a look at these eruptions live feed from a web cam over the ever-present volcanic vents.
You must follow the link below, which sends to a web page where there are movies to Flash:
This volcanism is so typical of an Italian volcano to give its name to the phenomenon itself. The Erebus more is characterized by the presence of a "lake of lava inside the crater .... well you see at the beginning of each movie.
The original movies are here at the base of McMurdo.
Back to the first question: Antarctica is a continent of old such as Australia or Africa, low seismicity, why is this volcanic area?
Here the analogy is with the geological Africa .... that part of Africa is characterized by a large presence of volcanoes, Kilimanjaro, Kenya ECCC, arranged along the Rift Valley.
The Ross Sea is located along a rift that is moving away from the eastern to the western part of the continent.
This explains the volcanism: tectonic pops out from the magma.
